White Oak Distillery is one of Japan's most historically significant whisky producers, located in the city of Akashi in Hyogo Prefecture. Founded in 1888 on the site of Eigashima, the distillery holds the distinction of being the first in Japan to obtain a license for distilled spirits, granted in 1919. This makes White Oak a true pioneer in Japanese whisky history, predating many of the country's more widely known distilleries. While the distillery's whisky heritage stretches back over a century, serious malt whisky production did not begin in earnest until 1984, when the current copper pot stills were installed. The distillery produces the well-regarded Akashi range of whiskies, which includes both blended and single malt expressions. White Oak's whisky style reflects a delicate and refined Japanese approach, shaped by the unique coastal climate of the Akashi region, which is said to influence the maturation process and contribute to the whisky's distinctive character. Despite its relatively modest size, White Oak Distillery has earned a respected place among Japanese whisky enthusiasts worldwide. The Akashi label serves as the primary vehicle for showcasing the distillery's craftsmanship, offering approachable and elegant expressions that highlight the subtlety and precision associated with Japanese whisky making.
