Kurayoshi is a Japanese whisky brand produced by Matsui Shuzo, based in Tottori Prefecture on the Sea of Japan coast. The Kurayoshi Distillery itself has only been operating since 2017, though the brand was introduced in the 2010s. The name Kurayoshi is said to originate from a phrase meaning "life is good," and the region's large annual temperature variations along the Sea of Japan are believed to contribute to the character of its aged whiskies. The Kurayoshi range consists of pure malt whiskies that blend malt whisky sourced from distilleries in Scotland with Japanese whisky, creating a world-blended style. Notable expressions include the Kurayoshi Pure Malt and age-stated releases such as the 12 and 18 Year Old. The Sherry Cask expression showcases the brand's use of varied cask maturation, using 100% malted barley whisky sourced from Scotland before blending in Japan. Kurayoshi has earned recognition on the international stage, with the Kurayoshi 18 YO Pure Malt Whisky receiving attention at the 2023 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and the Kurayoshi Pure Malt earning a bronze medal at other international awards. These accolades highlight Matsui Shuzo's commitment to quality craftsmanship in their growing whisky portfolio.
