Speyside, Scotland · Founded in 1876
Glenlossie is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky distillery founded in 1876 near Elgin by John Duff, a former manager at Glendronach distillery, together with partners Alexander Allen and HMS Mackay. In 1895, the Glenlossie-Glenlivet Distillery Company was formally established. The distillery joined the Distillers Company Limited (DCL) in 1919, and in 1930 it was placed within DCL's Haig portfolio, an association that continues to this day under current owner Diageo. Glenlossie has long been regarded as one of Speyside's unsung heroes, producing a light, grassy and elegant spirit that has made it a prized component in prestigious blended Scotch whiskies, particularly within the Diageo portfolio. The distillery operates quietly and efficiently, with much of its output destined for blending rather than single malt releases. United Distillers, a predecessor to Diageo, became owners in 1986 and released the first official single malt bottling in 1990 — a 10-year-old expression — offering enthusiasts a rare opportunity to taste Glenlossie as a standalone whisky. Despite its relatively low profile as a single malt, Glenlossie enjoys a strong reputation among blenders and whisky connoisseurs who appreciate its consistent, refined character. Independent bottlers and the Scotch Malt Whisky Society have helped shine a light on this understated distillery over the years.
