Glenburgie

/glen-BUR-gee/

Glenburgie is a Speyside single malt distillery with a history that stretches back to 1829, when it was built on the flatlands near Forres by William Paul. The distillery originally operated under the name Kilnflat before closing in 1870. It was reopened in 1878 under Charles Kay, at which point it was renamed Glenburgie. Over the years it has also been known by the names Glenburgie-Glenlivet and Glen Burgie, reflecting the common practice of the era of associating distilleries with the prestigious Glenlivet name. Despite its long history, Glenburgie remains relatively little-known as a single malt. The distillery is perhaps best recognised as a key component in Ballantine's blended Scotch whisky, which has historically been its primary purpose. Glenburgie's character is typically described as light and fruity, with floral and orchard fruit notes that are well suited to blending. Independent bottlers have occasionally released single malt expressions, offering whisky enthusiasts a rare chance to explore the distillery's clean and elegant Speyside style.
