Glen Spey

Glen Spey is one of Speyside's most anonymous distilleries, quietly producing single malt whisky in the town of Rothes since 1878. It was founded by James Stuart & Co. under the name Mill of Rothes — and fittingly so, as the site originally operated as an oatmeal mill before being converted to whisky production. James Stuart, who would later become an owner of The Macallan, established Glen Spey during the late Victorian whisky boom, a period when the arrival of the railway opened up the Speyside region to rapid distillery expansion. The distillery is now part of Diageo's extensive portfolio. Glen Spey is known for producing a light, delicate style of single malt, a character shaped in part by its distinctive production process. The spirit stills are operated at low pressure and fitted with purifiers, which increase copper contact and contribute to the whisky's notably clean and gentle profile. While much of Glen Spey's output has traditionally gone into blends, the distillery has released expressions as a single malt, most notably a 12-year-old bottling. Independent bottlers have also taken an interest in the distillery, with aged expressions such as a 28-year-old appearing on the market. Despite its relative obscurity, Glen Spey offers a quietly refined Speyside character that rewards the curious whisky enthusiast.
