Balcones Distilling was founded in 2008 in Waco, Texas, making it one of the pioneering craft distilleries in the Lone Star State. Originally a largely hand-built operation, Balcones began distilling in 2009 and quickly made history as the second whiskey distillery in Texas and the first in the state dedicated to single malt production. Founded by Chip Tate, the distillery grew rapidly before moving to a new home in 2015 — the historic Texas Fireproof Storage building in Waco. In 2022, Balcones was acquired by global spirits giant Diageo, cementing its status as a major force in American whisky. Balcones is best known for its diverse portfolio of Texas-made spirits, with a particular focus on American Single Malt Whiskey and Texas Bourbon.
