Amrut Distilleries was founded in 1948 in Bangalore, India, by J. N. Radhakrishna Rao Jagdale — a moment in history that coincided with India's hard-won independence from British rule. The name "Amrut" is derived from Sanskrit, meaning "nectar of the gods," a fitting tribute to a distillery that would go on to put Indian whisky firmly on the global map. Today, the company is led by third-generation Managing Director Rakshit N. Jagdale, continuing a proud family legacy. Amrut is widely recognised as the pioneer of Indian single malt whisky. Its portfolio is remarkably diverse, spanning close to 50 single malt variants alongside mass-market whiskies, rum, brandy, and gin — producing 83 brands in total. The core single malt range includes expressions such as Amrut Indian, Amrut Indian Cask Strength, Amrut Peated Indian, and Amrut Peated Indian Cask Strength. The distillery's hot climate in Bangalore accelerates maturation, resulting in whiskies with exceptional depth and complexity in a relatively short ageing period. Amrut's innovative approach to ageing and its uncompromising quality have earned it widespread international acclaim. The distillery is celebrated for proving that world-class single malt whisky can be crafted outside of Scotland and Ireland, inspiring a new generation of whisky producers across Asia and beyond.
